Posted by Ramone Russell in PS3, PlayStation Games, modnation racers, united front games on September 7th, 2010
Greetings everyone! Ramone Russell here with another ModNation Monday Tuesday update!
Double XP week ends Thursday!
Remember to take advantage while you can, it only lasts through Wednesday. By the way, some of you have asked so I wanted to clarify — the multiplier is not applied at the end of a race so you won’t see it there, but when you get back to the ModSpot and check your stats you’ll see that you’re getting Double XP. Enjoy!

Blind-Rush says: “Forgotten Ruins Mountain is a former battle zone of a war held by three civilizations; desert, jungle and alpine civilizations. After the war, all was left in ruins making one of the best tracks in the ModNation world. To make this track, I used props from three themes, the ones mentioned earlier. I took advantage of this feature to make various passages, each one with a different theme.”
Track Name: ”Switchbacks and Stairs”
Created by: Harbringer
Harbringer says: “A simple, yet not so simple track that takes you up a mountain through a series of switchbacks then flying back down a crate staircase. This is a unique track you don’t want to miss!”)
Track Name: ”Evolution City”
Created by: Stitchless
Stitchless says: “This is Evolution City. After several people began gaining powers, the city was given to this population so they would have a place to call home. Heroes and villains roam these streets, and some even the sky. Even after the recent attack by Toxic, the city sprang back quickly. Be forewarned: there are many paths to chose from. Will you follow the sewer line like the crazed cyborg? Will you take a detour through town? Or do your powers take you to the top, soaring above all?”

Track Name: Shipwreck Cove
Created by: pikminenco
pikminenco says “a powerful hurricane “devastated” most of the ships but that doesn’t stop the MRC to make a racetrack of it. There are 3 ways to cross the lake, through the shipwrecks, through the shallow water and a hidden route that you will have to find yourself.”
Track Name: Desert Island Dash
Created by: atheistsw
atheistsw says “This is a pretty challenging course, but also very rewarding. There are multiple routes to take which offer up their own pros and cons and should make for varied, thoughtful racing strategies. I do believe this is my most fun and most balanced track to date featuring a bit of everything. Fast straights, drifty hairpins, big air jumps, devastating devastators, some roly poly barrels and a few nifty shortcuts for good measure, this event has it all and a bit more thrown in at that.”
Track Name: Shortcut City
Created by: Flamestalker-NL
Flamestalker-NL says “Go between those trucks, check that alleyway and what’s behind the market stalls? As the name implies this track is littered with shortcuts. There are more then 15 shortcuts to find, some even combine or split up. The combinations you can make are almost endless.”

ModNation Monday: Community Artist Spotlight, Secrets of a “Super Creator”
Posted by Ramone Russell in PS3, PlayStation Games, modnation racers, united front games on August 23rd, 2010
Today’s post is our first Community Artist Spotlight. Every other week or so, ModNation Monday will spotlight a community creator who is producing outstanding original content. We’re happy to introduce Myles Gordon our first ModNation “Super Creator!” Myles specializes in making unique-looking and technically sound tracks. Game Informer’s August issue features a piece on Mr. Gordon and the amazing tracks he’s created. Our focus on Myles starts with some of his tracks and a short Q&A.
MylesG Tracks
Here is an overview of some of the highlight tracks among the Tours. There are eight Tours total with four tracks each. To find them just do a text search under tracks for “P Tour”, “M Tour”, “G Tour”, “O Tour”, “N Tour”, “R Tour”, “Q Tour” or “W Tour.”
Track Name: M Tour 3: Aquatica
MylesG says: “Water and fire mix in this ocean-based Stunt Park. Aquatica is all about big air, big stunts and big speed. Skilled racers will be able to maintain max boost throughout most of this course due to long drifts and huge air time.”
Track Name: O Tour 4: Sky Fleet
MylesG says: “Take to the skies above Tek City and join the battle that rages above. Help the city’s defense airships take down the Overlord’s Dreadnought and declare yourself the Omega Champion.”
Track Name: O Tour 2: Armagna’s Forest
MylesG says: “The picturesque race through Armagna’s Forest begins with a tour of the forest floor; drifting fans are sure to be at home here. Should you not get lost once heck of a roller coaster ride through the treetops awaits you on the way to the finish.”
Track Name: G Tour 4: Tek Cityscape
Q&A with “Super Creator” Myles Gordon
How do you like creating with ModNation?
“It’s great! The tools are fun and easy to use, and you’re really given a lot of freedom with what you can make. One thing that really surprised me with the track editor is how much variety people have been able to do with only four themes.”
What do you enjoy the most about the game?
“The Track Editor is my favorite part, but gameplay wise, I love the addition of the shield — it really gets rid of the random frustration of being slammed by items that you see in other kart racers. It makes the game more skill based where you aren’t punished for being in first place.”
What would you like to see in DLC or for a possible sequel?
“Some new themes would be great (Snow, Futuristic, or Lava) as well as more props to work with, such as waterfalls, more building blocks, and a thin object with a large surface area to be used as a roof with the building blocks)”
What inspires you?
“Well I was a big fan of Mario Kart, Wipeout and F-Zero so there are probably some influences there in some of my tracks. However, when I’m planning my tracks out, I usually just sit down in front of a white board and write down any ideas that come to mind. Really all I try and do is build something fun that plays well, feels unique and looks cool.”
Who are your favorite creators and creations?
“My favorite track creators are: ArgorokX, WilsonPhillips-X and VintageOctopus. All of their tracks are unique and fun to race on.”
What advice would you give to other ModNation creators?
“1. Plan it out beforehand. Just hopping into the editor without a solid plan will probably result in something that feels generic. I usually start by writing down some ideas with the goal being to have a least 3 unique moments on the course that make it stand out. I’ll then draw out a rough plan on paper and then go into the editor and try and build it.
2. Build the track first and decorate second. Get a your layout as final as possible before starting to decorate your course with props. Its much more difficult to change the course layout after you’ve filled it with props. Also ensure your layout is fun to race on and not frustrating – keep in mind it will only get more difficult as you add in the props.
3. Test before publishing. One of the best ways to do this is to have some people that have never played your track give it a try in front of you. Watch them play and get their feedback and you’ll be able to see parts that are confusing or frustrating. Also be sure to try resetting yourself (with select) during some of the more complicated sections of your course (especially jumps) to make sure you don’t reset in weird places or get stuck.”

ModNation Monday: XP Races Remedied and UFG Insights
Posted by Scott Nielsen in PS3, PlayStation Games, modnation racers, united front games on August 9th, 2010
Greetings from Vancouver, Canada! My name is Scott Nielsen, a producer at UFG and I’m happy to report some good news.
Last week an issue was introduced with the release of Title Update 1.02 that affected XP Races and XP Series resulting in situations where players were unable to load into the respective XP Races. This issue has been addressed in Title Update 1.03 which we are currently scheduled to release during our regular maintenance window tomorrow morning (Tuesday, August 10th).
I’d also like to take a moment to try and provide some insight into our game and hopefully some clarity surrounding the load times in ModNation Racers. This is a subject that both our fans and the team are very sensitive about and we want to assure you that a lot of work has been done in order to address these issues. We have made some significant strides to improving the user experience in ModNation Racers with the release of the Title Update.
Custom Creations means A LOT of Data
As you know, ModNation Racers can’t be compared to most racing games as it lets you create your own experience. That means we have races where each Mod and Kart are all different. Each of these creations are made up of hundreds of individual textures that are fed into our compositing system to create the final creation. As there are up to 12 players in a race, each with a Mod and Kart, we need to do this 24 times for a single race. That’s a lot of data!
Making Tracks
In regular racing games, track data is packed onto the disc for loading, but ModNation is not a regular game. One of our focuses on ModNation Racers was to make it incredibly quick and easy to share your tracks online. To enable this, we store tracks as blueprints for rebuilding, which are very small on disc. To build a track in the code, we have to first load up this blueprint, then we need to generate all of the additional data for the track and then start compositing. Both these steps are not simple, but they are necessary to bring our tracks to life.
So as you can see, there were a lot of tradeoffs involved in creating a game that allows creating and sharing. We tried to strike the best balance we could between all of the competing priorities. Creativity is so important to us, and the ModNation community, that we didn’t want to sacrifice the amazing flexibility that we have made available.
Breaking Down Load Time Improvements
It’s important to note that we made a number of significant changes to the game flow in order to improve the user experience in ModNation Racers. We focused our efforts on making improvements to high-impact areas of the game; specifically when doing Career Races and Online Races. In fact, the biggest improvements you will see are when doing multiple Career Races or Online Races.
You should see a reduction in time when loading from Career Central into a Race, plus significant improvements when returning from a Career Race to Career Central. What used to be around 30 seconds now takes about 6 or 7 seconds. Online Racing sees very similar benefits when returning from a race to the Gameroom. Changes made to the flow of XP Races have significantly reduced load times when returning to the Gameroom from an XP Race. What makes this great now is that when you find a group of people that you are enjoying XP Racing with, you are able to stay matched with them as opposed to returning to the ModSpot and having to get matched into another XP Race with different people.
We’re confident these changes provide a more positive user experience for the ModNation community. With a game like ModNation Racers, we thrive on the strength of our community and we want to do everything to make sure you have a great time with our game.
A big thanks from all of us here at UFG for supporting our game!
ModNation Monday: Title Update 1.02 Releases August 4th, Brings Improvements
Posted by Ramone Russell in PS3, PlayStation Games, modnation racers, united front games on August 2nd, 2010
This Wednesday, August 4th at 2:00am (Pacific Time), the ModNation Racers Title Update 1.02 goes live improving many of the issues the community has been concerned about. On behalf of UFG, we want to thank everyone for supporting ModNation and being patient as we’ve worked hard to make it the best experience possible. If you didn’t see the patch details on the IGN last Friday, here is a run down:
Update: Title Update 1.02 for ModNation Racers unfortunately introduced an issue that affects online XP Races and XP Series. We’ve identified the cause and are quickly working on a solution to resolve the issue. We intend on updating the ModNation Community on the release of this fix as soon as possible.
Load Time Improvements
While there are still loads, you will see decreases in load times throughout the game.
New “Casual” Difficulty Mode
We’ve added a “casual” difficulty setting in the options screen.
Challenge friends in XP Series
We’ve added the ability to invite your friends to XP Races & Series.
No more “Hot Lap” Cheaters
We fixed a bug that allowed players to cut the track and post unbeatable times in Hot Lap.
Get into Online Races Quicker
Along with improved load times, we’ve removed the online game room from the ModSpot so you can get into the race faster.
Improved Server Stability
We’ve addressed issues to improve intermittent disconnects that players were experiencing.
Three Challenges now more attainable
We wanted to provide you challenges, but didn’t want to sacrifice fun. We found 3 challenges that proved extremely difficult and changed the conditions to complete them. This includes:
- Devastator takedown on Wild Run
- Devastator takedown on Modobahn
- Sideswipe 3 opponents on the cliff side on Fracture
The Tin Bucket Unlocked!
Finally this is an item is unlocked and available to everyone by default.
Collector Card Improvement
Now see all player creations in their entirety.
Improvements to ModNation Racers don’t stop here, we are still constantly listening to the community and are committed to making ModNation Racers one of the most enjoyable experiences you’ll have on your PS3.
New features on Community.ModNation.com
We added features to the Community site Community.ModNation.com to make the experience better too, including:

Check out your series and XP race stats here.

There’s allot to see, and it’s very detailed. When you leap off one of the jumps towards the end of the track, it gives you a spectacular view of the entire map before you cross the finish line. Tracks of the Week
Track Name: ”Bay Island Final”
Created by: Yika
Yika says: ”This track was originally intended to be a tribute to my favorite Studio Ghibli Film, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, but the more I worked on it, the more it took on a life of its own! And I am glad it did! I feel I made a track which is simply beautiful. Open it up in the editor to see how unique and detailed it is. The track itself runs fairly well, offering multiple routes with advantages and disadvantages. The road never gets boring, but there is never too much going on either.”
Track Name: ”The Farmer’s Daughter”
Created by: Coty4803
Coty4803 says: “An intricately farm themed track featuring one great shortcut through the farm’s barn. You can choose to take the main path over the barn which features two jumps; one over the barn and another over a dump truck. Drifting skill and precise driving are necessary to achieve fast lap times.”

Patch Info
I know everybody wants to know more about the patch that’s in development. We appreciate your patience as UFG places the final touches on it. There’s been a lot of community feedback and I think UFG has done a good job trying to include a lot of the improvements you’ve asked for. One of the improvements is the addition of a “casual” career difficulty that has less “aggressive” computer-controlled racers. I was able to spend some time last week playing the new build. Let me just say that I had a blast playing through the casual career difficulty and I think those that have been asking for this will be very pleased when you can get your hands on it!
Looking forward to sharing more ModNation Racers news next week!
