Nathan Drake Returns to PlayStation: The Official Magazine
Posted by Ryan Taljonick in PS3, PSN, psp on November 22nd, 2011
What better way to celebrate the arrival of PlayStation’s most anticipated game of the year than with a blowout review? PTOM’s holiday issue cover feature breaks down the highs (many) and the lows (not many) of UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception. Yes, it’s bigger and better than its predecessor in nearly every expected way, but even we were surprised by what emerged as the game’s defining trait.
The holiday season always means a deluge of games to review, but the quality of titles available this year is unprecedented. Check out our verdicts on Batman: Arkham City, Saints Row: The Third, and Rayman Origins and you may come to same conclusion we have: Our friends and family had better be generous this year ’cause we can’t afford all this gaming goodness.
But if your thoughts run more toward giving than getting (sucker), PTOM’s annual Holiday Gift Guide offers up the best gamer loot..er, presents of the season. The PTOM staff even makes personal appearances in the feature and share their most precious memories of Christmas’ past for your mocking pleasure.
Previews? You want previews? How about our first play impressions of Rockstar’s Max Payne 3? We also go hands-on with Final Fantasy XIII-2, Mass Effect 3, and Syndicate, along with extended play sessions on a bevy of PS Vita titles including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Resistance: Burning Skies, and up-and-comer Gravity Rush. The Vita preview barrage continues with 10 reasons why RPG fans should love the new portable system.
But we’ve saved the best for last…the last page of the magazine, that is. PTOM has been smitten with the holiday spirit and we’ve teamed with Mad Catz to give away three spectacular prize bundles. Flip to page 96 of PTOM’s Holiday issue, available on newsstands November 22, for entry details. Oh, and Happy Holidays everyone!

Returning to the spotlight, WWE ‘12, Tekken Hybrid and The King of Fighters XIII headline this week’s title bout, each franchise known to bring countless hours of combos, take-downs and finishers in their individual brawling arenas. Speaking of epic franchises, Final Fantasy returns to PSone classics and Ratchet and Clank (including Dr Nefarious and Qwark) arrive on PSN as a full digital download in Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One.
Gobble gobble, The Drop.
PlayStation 3

- TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT HD – This is a high-definition remake of the classic from the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. Boasting a 20-fighter plus cast of characters, Tekken Tag Tournament offered a major revolution in the Tekken fighting style by adding a tag battle system with two characters for each team. And if that’s not enough, TTT HD retains the minigame Tekken Bowl, which brings Tekken fans action-packed bowling excitement with a punch!

- TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2 PROLOGUE – Offering gamers a sampler of the arcade game, TTT 2 Prologue features four playable characters that appear in the Tekken Blood Vengeance movie. - TEKKEN BLOOD VENGEANCE 3D – Set in the rich Tekken universe, this 3D CGI movie follows Xiaoyu Ling, seasoned martial artist and high school student, tasked by the G Corporation to infiltrate an international school in Kyoto to gather information on the mysterious student Shin Kamiya. Before she can make any progress in the investigation, Shin is kidnapped by an unknown assailant. Digging deeper into Shin’s background in an attempt to rescue him, Xiaoyu learns about the frightening underbelly of the Mishima Zaibatsu. The King of Fighters XIII – With the triumphant return of fan favorite characters like Mai, K’, and Vice, extensive refinement of the core fighting engine based on community feedback, and vastly improved network functionality, The King of Fighters XIII represents the HD entry in the series that fans have been waiting for.
Painstaking effort has been made to address every last concern following the last entry: fights play faster; the addition of over a half dozen play modes offers variety and replayability; the game’s beautifully rendered and animated character sprites are better distinguished from the backgrounds–which happen to be richer and more detailed; the camera perspective is less restricted; fighters have more moves, including new supers and the all-new Neomax supers; and much, much more.

Two of the biggest award-winning franchises return to the PS3 this week with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Quantic Dream’s cinematic thriller Heavy Rain receives a Director’s Cut loaded with DLC, the complete soundtrack, and bonus making-of features (my favorite!). Fans of Metal Gear Solid can look forward to playing MGS2: Sons of Liberty, MGS3: Snake Eater and MGS: Peace Walker with the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection on Blu-ray.
Io the digital storefront, digital versions of EA’s Fight Night Champion and Dead Space 2 arrive on PSN ready to download this Tuesday. PlayStation 3
Heavy Rain: Director’s Cut (PlayStation Move Support) – Heavy Rain is a cinematic and evolving thriller from Quantic Dream, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Fahrenheit (released as Indigo Prophecy in the US). Dealing with a range of adult themes, the game revolves around a sophisticated plot and strong narrative threads that explore a complex moral proposition. You assume the role of multiple characters, with very different backgrounds, motivations and skills, in a world shaped by Bending Storylines – a dynamic narrative design where your actions and decisions will shape your story. The Director’s Cut includes the original game, Heavy Rain Chronicles: Episode 1 – The Taxidermist DLC, a series of eight “making of” bonus videos, the game’s soundtrack, three dynamic themes and more.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – War comes home in the explosive third chapter of the blockbuster first-person action series set in near-future combat scenarios.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – The Empire of Tamriel is on the edge. The High King of Skyrim has been murdered. Alliances form as claims to the throne are made. In the midst of this conflict, a far more dangerous, ancient evil is awakened. Dragons, long lost to the passages of the Elder Scrolls, have returned to Tamriel. The future of Skyrim, even the Empire itself, hangs in the balance as they wait for the prophesized Dragonborn to come; a hero born with the power of The Voice, and the only one who can stand amongst the dragons.
Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection – Accept the mission and play three great chapters in the Metal Gear franchise with the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Included are Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. All three games are rendered in high-definition for the first time!
LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (Also on PSP) – LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 builds upon the magical gameplay, lessons and potion-making skills learned in LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 to equip gamers with the tools necessary to challenge a host of new foes and some familiar ones. Happy Feet Two: The Videogame – Happy Feet Two is a 3D musical adventure game for the entire family inspired by the whimsical Antarctic world of the animated film. In the game, new dangers are threatening the penguin nation, and it’s going to take everyone working — and dancing — together to save them from extinction. Fate/EXTRA Hits PSP Today
Posted by Frank "Bo" DeWindt in psp on November 1st, 2011
Fate. Destiny. A pre-destined future. Call it what you will, but fans of the highly successful Type-Moon franchise will come flocking at the mere mention of the word. To those not quite as familiar with the Fate series or all things Type-Moon, we’d like to present to you an excellent entry point into the universe in the form of the exclusive PSP title Fate/EXTRA!
In this role-playing game you’ll assume the role of a male or female protagonist as you pair up with one of three mystical and mysterious servants to aide you on your quest.
Saber: A class known for its well-balanced abilities and its superior swordsmanship. While Saber may be short in stature at a diminutive 4’9”, her strength and skill with a sword make her worthy of the Saber-class designation.
Archer: A class that specializes in the use of ranged weapons such as bows. An enigmatic warrior clad in a scarlet coat who possesses the ability to excel at weapons other than the bow…
Caster: A class that excels at magic-based combat due to their superior intelligence, though at the cost of being woefully inadequate at hand-to-hand combat. This particular Caster is a powerful magic user with an exotic vulpine appearance and is always clad in a blue kimono. She can be incredibly malicious and vindictive when the situation demands it, but otherwise is absolutely devoted to her Master.
Battles are one-on-one, and the turns are divided into six actions. An action consists of Attack, Guard, or Break. This applies to your enemy as well. The more you fight an enemy the more you’ll learn about their attack pattern to combat them more effectively. You can also pair up with a Servant of your choice at Tsukumihara Academy as you battle it out in the Arena against other Masters in order to vie for the Holy Grail.
Fate/EXTRA launches today on PSP for $29.99 (standard edition) and $39.99 (limited edition). Or you can grab it off PSN for only $24.99!
