Coming Soon to PSN: Mahjongg Artifacts for PSP and PS3
Posted by Julia Palatovska in g5 entertainment, mahjongg artifacts, PlayStation Games, PS3, psp, psp minis on June 11th, 2010
I want to introduce a new PlayStation mini game for your “classical” collection: Mahjongg Artifacts, arriving on PSP (and PS3) on Tuesday, June 15!
Mahjongg Artifacts is a beautiful and engaging classical board game that is a prequel to Mahjongg Artifacts: Chapter 2, which you may have already tried on the PSP. Both chapters of Mahjongg Artifacts have a Story Mode featuring the main character’s quest for lost relics. Now you have a chance to discover how the story of the game started!
Mahjongg Artifacts features three play modes that take you through five exotic cultures: China, Greece, Egypt, Mexico and Atlantis. The Story Mode presents a comic story that unfolds as you master 25 layouts in the mahjongg game. Bonuses and powerups differ from those in Mahjongg Artifacts: Chapter 2, so the gameplay won’t feel the same. In the Classic Mode, you have an opportunity to choose layouts and tile sets you want to play, and in the Endless Mode your game never ends — the tower of game pieces rises, offering you unpredictable tile arrangements.
Check out the video of Mahjongg Artifacts above to see the game’s beautiful graphics and relaxing music inaction. Don’t miss out — the game has a wealth of options for just $4.99.
Coming to PSN Store: Cubixx for PSP and PS3
Posted by Al Evans in cubixx, laughing jackal, PlayStation Games, PS3, psp, psp minis on June 4th, 2010
Hello again! Laughing Jackal is pleased to announce that our first PlayStation minis title, Cubixx, is coming to the US PSN Store on June 8th, 2010 for the great price of $3.99!
Cubixx has been very well received in our native EU PSN Store, and now we’re sharing the cuboid love with our friends across the Atlantic. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to check out this super-addictive retro title. Be there, or be, um… cube-shaped, I guess.
Cubixx takes inspiration from a couple of older games of the same type and tasks the player with using their laser to cut away the surfaces of a mysterious cube and free the energy within. Cutting longer lines and crossing multiple cube surfaces will reward you with larger combos, but at far greater risk.
The game features 20 levels of increasingly lunatic difficulty, we really do challenge anyone sane to try and beat Cubixx’s 20th level. Many have tried but only a brave few walked away with their pride intact (unfortunately I am not included in that number).
Cubixx is a pure fix of old-school, high score-chasing gameplay with a modern twist. Do you think you have what it takes to top the high score table? Check out the trailer above for more details on the game. Look for Cubixx to laser-cut its way onto the PSN Store on June 8th for $3.99! Check it out.
Coming Soon to PSN: Vibes for PSP and PS3
Posted by Al Evans in laughing jackal, PlayStation Games, PS3, psp, psp minis, vibes on June 4th, 2010
Just another quick announcement to let you all know about our exciting third PlayStation minis title for PSP and PS3, Vibes, which will release on the PlayStation Store on June 8th at the price of $5.49. Vibes is an action-packed rhythm game that includes a lucky 13 music tracks, covering everything from Classical to J-Pop, to Psychobilly, to Punk. With three levels of difficulty your finger will be well and truly wrecked. ;)
The game is squarely aimed at fans of the rhythm-based genre and has a steep learning curve, so if you think you have conquered Guitar Hero then give this a try. Starting off on the Easy difficulty allows the player to get used to the control mechanism — the difficulty then builds and builds, and will push players to the limit on the harder difficulty settings.
One feature we’re particularly proud of is the music-video inspired background sequences during gameplay. These not only look awesome, but they’re also hilarious (if I do say so myself), and feature things such as pulsating ducks, throbbing buildings and flexing sumo wrestlers. If that list isn’t 100% WIN then I don’t know what is — and don’t forget these items and more are all in the same game!
When creating Vibes, our principle aim was to create an addictive gameplay mechanism, accompanied by a fresh art style. We’ve definitely achieved both those things and — for my money — made one of the stand-out PlayStation minis titles. For more details on the game check out the trailer above (which is also available via the PlayStation Store).
For those who need reminding, Vibes is out on June 8th at $5.49. Hope you like it!
Coming Soon to PSN: History Egypt – Engineering an Empire for PSP & PS3
Posted by Iain McNeil in history egypt: engineering an empire, PlayStation Games, PS3, PSN, psp, psp minis, slitherine on May 28th, 2010
We’re really excited to have this opportunity to talk to you about our upcoming release, History Egypt: Engineering an Empire for PlayStation minis. We’ve been working on this game for nearly two years and it has gone through many iterations, but we’ve finally got something we’re happy with! Egypt Engineering an Empire is a strategy game inspired by the Engineering an Empire TV series by History and games like Civilization and Advance Wars. The TV series circles the globe and re-examines history’s most magnificent civilizations, surveying their architectural and engineering triumphs. Beginning with the Egyptians more than five-thousand years ago, the first of the 14 documentaries brings to life the spectacular glory of the Egyptian Pharaohs. We seek to do the same in our game.
While many strategy games play well on the PC, they are far too complex to play nicely on a console. They usually require too much information to be displayed on screen, or have a user interface designed around the mouse, and any attempts to bring it to the PSP require such dramatic changes that the gameplay is compromised. Other games come direct to the console and these can be great fun, but often lack a bit of depth. What we’ve tried to do is take the best of both worlds and develop a game with the depth and immersion of a PC strategy game but with the fun, approachable controls and look and feel of a true console game.
Egypt Engineering an Empire puts you in control of Egypt, or one of the many opposing nations of the time such as the Hittities, Assyrians, Babylonians, and many more. You are in control of the development of your empire, constructing utility buildings for the economic development or military buildings to improve your armed forces. You can even build epic structures such as the Pyramids and Ishtar Gate, which bestow great benefits on your city. Each nation has its own unique unit and epic structure giving you new ways to play each time. You’ll recruit troops, fight battles, and can enter in to diplomacy with your neighbors…or, if you prefer, you can ignore diplomacy and deal with everyone by the sword! You have a range of military units at your disposal, ranging from swordsmen to spearmen, cavalry archers and lancers, battle wagons, and the feared chariots. You can even recruit camels riders!
We’ve designed the map on a grid system of hexes. This allows players to easily select hexes using the directional pad or analog stick. The UI has been designed from the ground up to be playable on the PSP. The X button always selects things and the Circle button cancels. When you select an object, a list of options available pop up and you select the one you want from a list box. You don’t have to remember to press Square or Triangle to get different options. It makes it really easy to pick up and play the game because all the information you need is given to you when you need it. People who have never played a strategy game before will find themselves at home very quickly.
As a result of the collaboration with the History TV channel, the game is all based on extensive historical research to make sure it’s as accurate as possible, without compromising gameplay. If we have to choose between an “accurate simulation” and a “fun game”, we always go with “fun game”! All of the soldiers in the game really existed and their uniforms are accurate. Cities are in their real locations with their real names, as are the nations. If you like a bit of authenticity to your gameplay then you’ll definitely find it here.
We’ve also thrown in an option to allow you to play two-player head-to-head in hotseat mode, playing on the same PSP. You can play individual battles against another player, but the real fun is in playing multiplayer campaigns. You can either player as a team and take on the computer, or have a free-for-all where the last man standing wins. The campaign maps range from tiny ones with two nations and one city each, up to massive campaigns with 14 nations and almost 30 cities. In most campaigns you can choose which nation to play and each has its own set of victory conditions. In some campaigns you may have to conquer a specific enemy nation, while in others you might be outnumbered and just have to survive. The difficulty levels mean all players will be able to find a level of challenge to suit them and the game promises many many hours of gaming fun.
We really hope you enjoy Egypt Engineering an Empire. We certainly enjoyed making it!

Coming to PlayStation minis: Stellar Attack for PSP and PS3
Posted by Al Evans in laughing jackal, PlayStation Games, PS3, psp, psp minis, stellar attack on May 27th, 2010
UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Stellar Attack was not released June 1st. Please stay tuned to PlayStation.Blog for an updated release date.
Hey everyone! I’m pleased to announce that Laughing Jackal’s first PlayStation minis title, Stellar Attack, is to be released on the PSN Store on June 1st for the PSP and PS3. Stellar Attack is an homage to classic shoot-em-up Star Castle, and is also inspired by a range of action-puzzle games, featuring a mix of score-chasing puzzles, fast action and precision targeting.
Here’s some background to the game (featuring the best story I could think of in under five minutes!):
Deep in space, a lost starfighter is trapped by a series of evil turrets; turrets that are generating a purple energy field which is preventing the starfighter from returning home. To make things more difficult, these evil robo-turrets surround themselves with vast strings of protective coloured orbs. Using its multicoloured laser, our intrepid starfighter must blast a path through the orbs to destroy the turrets in each level — and if it can achieve a new high score on the way, then so much the better. In the future, everyone knows that the only language an evil robotic turret understands is destruction…and a good high score.
Stellar Attack’s “racking” multiplier score system means that you only build good scores by hitting orbs consistently with the right colored lasers. Breaking your chain of hits resets your multiplier and messes up your score, ruining your starfighter’s day and making evil turrets laugh at you.
If score-chasing, orb-blasting, turret-destroying, old-school puzzle action is your idea of fun (who’s isnt?) then Stellar Attack has everything you need.
Some of Stellar Attack’s best features:
- Old school shooter gameplay blended with score-chasing puzzle elements.
- Vibrant, colourful presentation and a thumping soundtrack.
- “Racking” multiplier score system offers great replayability.
- Six different craft to master.
- “Vector” and “Direct” control schemes to suit old-school and fast-action play styles.
Stellar Attack is our first release on the US PSN Store, so please check it out — we hope you like it!
New to PSN Store: Car Jack Streets for PSP & PS3
Posted by Paul Farley in car jack streets, PlayStation Games, PS3, PSN, psp minis, tag games on April 30th, 2010
The team at Tag Games is pleased that our first-ever PlayStation Minis game Car Jack Streets is now available from the PlayStation Store!
If you haven’t heard of the game before, it’s best described as an action, driving, and crime game. You play as Randal Meyers, a small-town crook that’s run up a million dollars in debt to the Mob…and they want it back! You need to do whatever you can to pay that debt back, or else you’re a dead man. Rob banks, steal cars, do jobs for the crime lords and even deliver pizza if you have to. Just make those payments on time, or else…
Car Jack Streets started life a few years ago when a few Tag Games team members (who also worked on the first Grand Theft Auto games) suggested we try and make a GTA-style game for cell phones. Trying to cram all that content into a very small device was hard work, but we did it and Car Jack Streets was born! It was very important for us when designing the game that it took into account that most people would play for short periods of time and would probably be traveling or doing other things while playing. With this in mind we added an innovative real-time element: the time in the game is the same as the time in the real world. If it’s night time, then the game reflects this. If you need to get to the bank in five minutes to rob it, then that’s five real minutes! And if Frankie gives you a week to pay back $50,000 of your gambling debt, then that’s one real week. It’s a cool concept and one that works really well.
Along with the real-time element, Car Jack Streets has a number of other cool features. The city is huge, and it will take you a long time to explore it! There are hidden items to collect and side tasks to accomplish. With a wide variety of great vehicles and weapons, you’re going to enjoy your visit to Jack City! There is a large list of achievements that you can attempt, ranging from the easy to the near-impossible, plus an almost limitless combination of missions to attempt. Oh and did we mention there is a ton of great music included? It’s a massive game squeezed into a Mini package and we just know you’ll love it!
Bringing Car Jack Streets to PlayStation Minis has been a joy, and we believe that this is the definitive version of the game, utilizing the PSP hardware to run the game faster and more vividly than ever before. We hope you enjoy the game and that some of you even manage to eventually pay off that debt! You can get more details on the game by visiting the Car Jack Streets site.

Coming to PSN This Week: NormalTanks for PSP and PS3
Posted by Alexey Menshikov in beatshapers, breakquest, normaltanks, PlayStation Games, PS3, PSN, psp, psp minis on April 27th, 2010
Hi there! This is my first post for the PlayStation.Blog, so I’ll give you a brief introduction. I started my video game career in 1998 as an audio designer, working on the Carnivores series, EA’s Black and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and many more. More recently, myself and key team members were responsible for IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey for the PSP, MelodyBloxx, Rhythm of War PSP, and BreakQuest (see below).
So, NormalTanks! This game is an old school-looking, fast-paced, multi-directional, top-down arcade shooter set in a sci-fi universe.
There are eight challenging, dynamic, and hazardous environments to tackle: inside enemy bases, outdoor jungles, mountains and more. Every level has its own end-level boss to defeat. Generally, the game features more than 30 different enemy types including tanks, heavy machines, helicopters, robots and bio mechanical creatures, SSM missile sites, and heavy cannons.
To destroy enemies more effectively, there are special red-star bonuses that help upgrade your tank abilities: main cannon, machine gun, armor, and movement speed. The downside is that, when you get killed, you lose your bonuses. On some levels, your tank will transform into a tiny mine bot to stealthily pass by enemies and deactivate electric energy fields. In other levels, your tank turns into a giant walking robot, which demolishes everything on its way to the final level’s alien hive!
This year, NormalTanks received an “honorable mention” in the Independent Game Festival, Student Showcase.
We also didn’t get a chance to talk about our recently released BreakQuest PlayStation Mini, which was released on the US PlayStation Store on March 18th. Let’s fix that now!
The concept behind BreakQuest was created in conjunction with an advanced 2D physics engine, which gives a completely new game experience through a freely shaped world and reactive environment. There are 100 levels, especially adapted for the PSP’s wide screen, and every level features its own colorful design, unique sound theme, and elements behavior. Another breakthrough in BreakQuest is its huge palette of power ups and power downs. This including nine different weapons: guns, rockets and mines, various balls and bumper shapes and sizes, multi- and fire- balls, block wall and magnet, and much more.
Learn more about our PlayStation Mini games and new titles on the Beatshapers website, and you can follow us on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. From time to time we do exclusive download codes giveaways, so don’t miss out!
Coming to PSN This Week: Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess! for PS3 and PSP
Posted by Paul Croft in Featured Post, mediatonic, monsters probably stole my princess, PlayStation Games, PS3, PSN, psp, psp minis on April 22nd, 2010
Hi Everyone!
Today we’re super pumped to announce that our first PlayStation Mini, Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess!, goes live today on the PlayStation Store!
For those who aren’t familiar with the game, here’s a short summary.
Monsters have (probably) stolen your princess! Those fiendish and misshapen fools have (as far as we know) made off with your true love — and they haven’t even had the good grace to leave a shred of evidence to follow. Only sweeping accusations and devastating style can save her from the fate she will (possibly) face now!
Available exclusively from the PlayStation Store, MPSMP comes with a full story mode, six unique stages, awesome animated cutscenes and an incredible soundtrack the Duke himself would approve of. With 24 levels of monster pounding justice, this is (probably) the best deal ever.
Check out the trailer to see the game in action:
The game is available on both PS3 and PSP worldwide for the price of $4.99, so you can head to the store and grab it today! Be sure to let us know your best level scores: can anyone beat 2,300 on the first story mode level?
Thanks for all the great feedback and support! We’ve had an awesome time making the game. We’ve written a bit more about it on our blog here.
For more information on the making of the game, check out this blog post on our website, or follow Mediatonic on Facebook and Twitter.
