The holidays arrive in PlayStation Home this Thursday, December 15th with the force of an F5 gust, bringing games, quests, rewards, and plenty of wonderful, wintry fun for all. Beginning in the newly-decorated PlayStation Home Mall, players will find a plentitude of festive items at deals that simply can’t be beat. From free goodies hidden within the stores as a sign of goodwill towards all to special bundles priced as low as they go, ‘tis the season to go shopping in PlayStation Home.

Of course, no winter holiday would be complete without a special event, which is why we have called in favors with our friends Snowman, Snow Bear, and some very special guests for what is sure to be the celebration of the year.

Hosted in a snow-covered Pier Park, the Winter Holiday Hullabaloo is a collection of quests and community activities that reward players with exclusive items and collectibles only available from this limited-time holiday event. Start by going to the Activity Board to start the Winter Holiday Hullabaloo quest; then catch a boat from Pier Park to transport to this chill(y) locale where Snowman and Snow Bear will provide clues that will lead you throughout a vast winter wonderland filled with tons of surprises. Complete all the quests to unlock a variety of special rewards that will leave your inventory bulging with awesome mementos of the 2011 holiday season!

Just in time for New Years, Lockwood releases their Midnight Glade personal space, which lets players unleash a pyrotechnic display against the dark sky. With grassy fields that turn into gently sloping hills, an idyllic spreading oak tree, and a campfire area the Midnight Glade is the ideal spot to ring in the New Year with your friends.

Pick up the Zeus and Comet rockets from the Lockwood Publishing store, choose your favorite colors and then position your launcher (diagrams and details on the back of the launchers which will help make setting up the perfect display easy). Get eight of your friends in the Midnight Glade at the same time to unlock the Supernova Firework reward – you can use the built-in Gift Machine to send them home with a gift or two (and they can return the favor)!

The PlayStation Home Mall receives yet another huge update this week with new Mydeco items from VEEMEE, additions to the popular Drey line from Lockwood, Adidas clothing courtesy of Konami, more Urban Camo costumes (also from Konami), and tons more!

To help celebrate the release of PlayStation Home v1.6 last week (which now allows for up to 100 items to be placed in your personal space), we’ve even put select decorations on sale in the Furniture store. Here’s a look at some of the clothing, furniture, costumes, and companions coming to the PlayStation Home Mall this week – be sure to log in this week and add these items to your collection!

Sodium2 sees the second part of the Payback Update this week with the introduction of brand new fuel additive and frame upgrades for your velocity racer. Finally, we wanted to give you all a sneak peek at one of our soon-to-be-released clubhouses – the Desert Haven. How do you define what makes an “indie” game? Does “indie” have to mean two game developers building the future of the games industry out of a garage? Does it refer to creating original intellectual property? The debate is ongoing, but one thing is clear: indie game development provides experiences that no one else can. Whether that experience is an interactive psychology test (TestYourself Psychology), guiding a flower petal on the winds of change (Flower) or razing the countryside as a gold-hoarding dragon (Hoard), PlayStation Network is dedicated to delivering games that push the envelope of our young interactive medium.

SCEA seeks out the best development talent from colleges and universities through our academic program as well as at industry shows like IndieCade (where our PlayStation Home partnership with Codename was born), the IGF pavilion at GDC and E3. We also host developer mixers, where we’ve discovered some of the most talented developers on PSN. Once developers are discovered, we can determine which development model will give them the best support to help them thrive. PSN has been the only platform to fully embrace indie developers, and in 2012, more indie-developed PSN exclusives are on the way, including Papo & Yo, Retrograde, Closure, Dyad, and many more.

With the 2011 coming to a close, we also wanted to highlight some of the most successful indie game development efforts on the year. If you haven’t already, give these games a shot during your holiday vacation.

Dia Frampton – “Red”
After starting sister-group Meg & Dia at age 18, Dia Frampton and co. gained moderate success before being dropped from their label in 2010. This Thursday, December 8th, we will release the latest update to the PlayStation Home client. PlayStation Home version 1.60 delivers a wealth of improvements and updates to the core client, not the least of which is a doubling of the item placement limit in personal spaces! Here’s a look at what’s coming to you as part of PlayStation Home v1.60:

How to Apply the v1.60 Patch
If you are upgrading from an old version of Home (v1.40 or earlier) then when you attempt to apply the v1.60 patch please wait for the orange “hard drive activity” light to stop flashing on your PS3 before commencing the patching process.

NEW FEATURES

Furniture Placement Limit
• We have doubled the furniture placement limit in personal spaces and clubhouses from 50 to 100 items.
• Standard and active furniture limits have been merged into the same system. Currently all actives take up 22 furniture slots in the new system. Thus you can now place a variety of different combinations:
• 100 standard furniture items or…
• 78 standard furniture items and 1 active or…
• 56 standard furniture items and 2 actives or…
• 34 standard furniture items and 3 actives or…
• 12 standard furniture items and 4 actives.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS

Targeting in Personal Spaces
• Targeting in personal spaces has been improved.
• This means you shouldn’t accidentally target furniture items through floors or ceilings any more.
• Although we have made exceptions for wall hangings and lights as these tend to be placed quite high up.
• If you find any items of furniture in places you can’t reach then you can always remove them through the furniture browser and place them somewhere else.

Portable Items and Companions
• We have changed the way that companion portables work so they will now automatically re-activate after you enter and leave a game or relocate between spaces. No more having to put your companion away and take them out again when you do this!

Help System
• There is a new help system to aid new users as they explore PlayStation Home for the first time.

Arcade Games
• Arcade games are no longer subject to the 3 minute inactivity timeout when placed as furniture in Personal Spaces or Clubhouses.

CHANGES

Menu Pad
• We have removed the “Community” section of the Menu Pad. The information that used to be contained in here is now communicated via the Message of the Day pop-up at login and the new loading screens.

Of course, there are plenty more bug fixes and enhancements that are part of v1.60 as well which will help improve your day-to-day experience in the wide world of PlayStation Home. There are also additional tools for developers that will enable them to make better games than ever before possible on the platform are coming as part of this massive update. In other news, it appears that ol’ Granny Lockwood’s been hard at work again, and this time she’s taken her inspiration from the chilly extremes of the planet the North and South Poles! Pumpkin Pie the Polar Bear and Popsicle the Penguin can’t wait to play with you. They both love to do tricks – be patient and they’re sure to show you what they can do (Granny Lockwood also knitted them some cousins just for the Gift Machine – look out for them – they’re only available for a limited time!)

The PlayStation Home Community Theater is updated this week with new content from Gamer Indepth—ShoutOuts, episode 20 and Luge Control, episode 3. In ShoutOuts, the team covers recent holiday community events, and showcases some of the spooky content releases, and Luge returns covering her first experiences in Home’s newest game RC Rally.

For those who may not know, PlayStation Home Clubhouses are unique private spaces where users can invite dozens of their friends to be members of the club, and anyone on the members list can come and go from the space, even when the owner is not present. These are excellent for building and sustaining gaming groups, clans, brotherhoods, sisterhoods, etc. because of this very flexibility and access as an invite-only space.

In addition to all the standard features you’ve come to expect from PlayStation Home Clubhouses, the War Room has a very unique social feature that helps club owners or team leaders get their message across during club meetings or discussions. It also includes a special access point allowing users to teleport from the War Room to other set locations. We’ll have more info regarding this awesome new Clubhouse soon – keep your eyes on this Blog to stay in the loop!

Hey everyone, it’s that time AT LAST! I wanted to first thank you all for your patience, it’s been a long wait, but at the same time it’s been even longer for us. We’ve been working on Stranger’s Wrath, one way or another for around 15 months now. From the initial discussions, to actually starting work on the project true, to then getting it done!

As most of you may know we originally planned to release the game around Easter, to be able to do that we were to have started full development in September last year, but as it transpired, we didn’t actually start until April 2011, which gave us our hoped late Summer release; but we ended up spending another couple of months on it, so here we are DONE AND DUSTED for release.

As such I’m extremely pleased to announce that Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD will release on December 27th in North America for $14.99. And we will be releasing worldwide! (all stores, except for the Far East/Russia/Ukraine and Portugal at this time).

We had planned on shipping with support for stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move and a few other little things, due to time limits we are not able to bring those features in this initial version. However we WILL be bringing them in an update in a couple months’ time, along with some other little extras we’ve got planned.

One of things we’ve been asked a lot over the past few months is if Stranger’s Wrath HD has a Platinum trophy, of course it does. This is a big game and can easily take at least 12+hrs to complete.

So what’s been updated in the HD version …

Characters

• All 84 character models have been updated with increased polygon counts and higher resolution textures.
• Wolvark Sloghandlers now release Slogs instead of Slegs.
• Professor Dimble now has glasses and an academic tome.
• New female voices have been recorded for two characters.
• Made Blisterz Booty unkillable.

Environments

• All environments have been given higher resolution textures.
• Most vegetation has been updated with increased polygon counts and/or higher resolution textures.
• A lot of environment now reflects in water where it didn’t before.
• Many, many pipes and barrels were rounded.
• New Easter Eggs added to the game.
• Added Blisterz Booty’s broken crud gun to the floor by his bola’d body.
• Sekto’s Office has been changed to more closely resemble than seen in the FMV.

Audio

• All game audio (voice, sound effects and music) have been upgraded to 16-bit 44KHz from 8-bit 11KHz or less!
• Support for 5.1, Dolby Digitial and DTS.

Display

• Everything now runs at 720p, 60 FPS, and in widescreen.
• All menus have been updated with a new design based on original unused concepts.
• New posters now occupy the inventory menu when no bounty is accepted.

Difficulty

• All armour upgrades now actually increase Stranger’s health.
• Added difficulty levels to the game: Easy, Medium and Hard.
• In Easy mode:
• Stranger has twice the health
• Enemies have half the health and stamina
• Enemies’ stamina recovers half as fast
• In Normal Mode:
• Stranger’s health and armour for later in the game have been re-balanced.
• In Hard mode:
• Stranger has a third less health.
• Enemies stamina recovers a third quicker.

Unlockables

• 37 Trophies: 23 bronze, 8 silver, 5 gold, 1 platinum
• 37 pieces of unlockable concept art
• Five unlockable movies

And, in anticipation of the new year, we’re very excited to kick off a new era for Qore with both a new host and new correspondent. Jesse jumps right into the giant sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2. With time travel, new fight mechanics, and new characters joining the old cast, XIII-2 expands an already epic storyline.
