TGS 2010: Tour the PlayStation Booth

Greetings from the future. The sun is slowing rising on what is sure to be a beautiful Saturday morning, here in Tokyo. It’s officially the third day of the Tokyo Game Show, and we haven’t missed a beat. PlayStation blew the roof off the Makuhari Messe convention center, with colossal announcements and tons of games. The PlayStation booth is sprawling with thousands of eager members of the press and gamers waiting to get their hands on the latest PS3 titles on PlayStation Move, and our favorite portable, the PSP.

With a video interview with devs on the new Devil May Cry, and a in-depth chat with The Last Guardian’s director and designer, Fumito Ueda — shot, captured and ready to edit. I ventured off on my next assignment — to capture our mammoth and most impressive showing at the Tokyo Game Show yet.

This Friday in SF: Experience PlayStation Move, Win Prizes and Lounge in Kevin Butler’s Office

As you know, the PlayStation Move will be available this weekend, and to help give you a preview of the fun times ahead, we’ve set up “PlayStation HQ” locations in cities throughout the U.S. so you can get some hands-on time with the games before launch.

I haven’t had a chance to drop by and prop my feet on Kevin Butler’s desk, so I’m planning to rectify that this Friday. Why don’t you join me? I promise to bring along pizza, schwag, and even some PlayStation Move bundles and software to raffle off to those who visit.

San Francisco store front

The cool thing about these venues is, we’re granting hands-on time with some of these Move-enabled games that most people have never tried. Here’s the title list for Friday night’s meet-up:

Plan to arrive early, as we only have space for about 200 friends. You can RSVP here.

The details:

Friday, September 17
Location: 658 Market Street, San Francisco
Time: 6 – 9 pm
RSVP: on Facebook

What do you like on your pizza?
Hope to see you there!

Dead Rising 2: Free Community Event in L.A. Tonight

We’re super excited about the upcoming 9/28 launch date of Dead Rising 2. We’re also excited because Dead Rising 2 marks the debut of the series on the PS3! The game looks and plays fantastic on the PS3 and we’ve been showing it off the last few months at all the major trade and consumer events (Captivate, E3, Comic Con and PAX).

Dead Rising 2 for PS3

Dead Rising 2 for PS3 Dead Rising 2 for PS3

Tomorrow Tonight we’re hosting an awesome community event in Los Angeles where Dead Rising fans can attend (for free!) and get their hands on the game. In addition to being able to play Dead Rising 2 prior to release we’ll have prizes, food, music, contests and more. Be sure and get there early as we’ll be giving away some cool, exclusive Greene’s Hardware t-shirts too (created by iam8bit). If you’re in the SoCal area, here are the specifics for tonight’s event:

What: Greene’s Hardware Super Sale (Dead Rising 2 Community Event)

Where: 2147 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026

When: Friday 8PM – 12 Midnight

Dead Rising 2 for PS3 Dead Rising 2 for PS3

If you haven’t heard about the game yet, here’s my 30 second elevator pitch….

Dead Rising 2 takes the zombie survival horror franchise to Fortune City, America’s latest and greatest entertainment playground. It features a new storyline, a brand new cast of characters, two online multiplayer modes (two-player co-op campaign and a four-player “TV show”-themed Pay-Per-View event that pits humans against zombies), thousands of on-screen zombies and more. As Chuck Greene, you have 72 hours to save your infected daughter, clear your name and survive the hordes of hungry zombies before the military comes in and nukes the city. To ensure your survival, you can combine everyday objects to create deadly combo weapons to use against the zombie horde. The weapon combos in Dead Rising 2 have to be seen in order to be believed and are the true “stars” of the game. There are loads of them in the game and besides being deadly they’re hilarious! My favorite is probably the Freedom Bear.

Dead Rising 2 for the PS3 ships on September 28th. Be sure and grab a copy before the zombie apocalypse hits…

Hope to see folks on Friday night in LA for the community event!

PAX Prime 2010: PlayStation Booth Video Tour

In the gaming industry and community, PAX Prime has become the perfect event for developers and gamers to truly connect with one another and celebrate the culture of gaming and all things geek. Within the very first minutes of the official opening of PAX Prime 2010, PlayStation fans swarmed our booth and were rewarded with hands-on time with inFAMOUS 2, Killzone 3 and God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Among Nariko and Sackboy cosplayers, you’ll also spot The Fight: Lights Out, Gran Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet 2, Dead Nation and MotorStorm: Apocalypse on the show floor. Instead of sitting There and attempting to conjure an image in your head of Helghast soldiers patrolling endless lines of fans patiently waiting hours for PlayStation gaming — I’ll show it to you.

PlayStation and IGN Team up for PAX PlayStation.Blog Beyond! Meetup

During Comic-Con a few weeks ago, IGN’s Greg Miller asked me if I had my PSP and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker with me. As it turns out, I did. Greg, a dude named Dennis Miller (not *that* Dennis Miller), and I then proceeded to take down Metal Gear Rex in an intense co-op match. Oh yeah, this was in the middle of G4’s party.

In that moment, an idea was born.

A few days later, Greg asked if I was interested in getting a bunch of Peace Walker fans together to tackle the hardest levels – the ones that are best handled cooperatively. Sounded good to me. As we began to plan it, we realized that such a group is already going to assemble… next week at Penny Arcade Expo.

Top Pot coffee

So here we are, doing this thing, and you’re invited. We’re renting out Top Pot Donuts in downtown Seattle next Thursday evening and will fill it with new and upcoming PSP games such as Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, Valkyria Chronicles II, Split/Second, and God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Also, we have ordered 34 dozen donuts. They’re tasty. Very tasty.

While it’ll no doubt be fun to try out those games, we also strongly encourage you to bring your own PSP for friendly competitive or cooperative matches in games like Hot Shots Tennis, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3, and, of course, MGS: Peace Walker. We’ll even lend you a copy if you wanna jump in but don’t already have one.

Are you sold on this yet? Wait, there’s more!

As you sample the games, we’ll be keeping track of the best players, and the top performers will get a special behind-the-scenes tour of our media-only area, where you’ll be able to check out games that won’t be on the show floor like inFAMOUS 2 and the recently announced Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One.

And every attendee will walk out with a voucher to download the demo for God of War: Ghost of Sparta – before anyone else gets to play it. Please tell me this is reason enough to attend.

Still want more? Ok, I’ll give: Greg Miller will autograph your bare chest if you ask politely.

Here’s what you need to know:

RSVP today, and don’t forget to bring your appetite for fried dough – we’ve got 408 donuts and we’re going to make Rey eat any leftovers.

God of War – Game Directors Live in LA!

Spartan Army Members! The time has come…

Earlier this month, we announced through the PlayStation.Blog that the God of War: Ghost of Sparta six-item pre-order bundle will include an EXCLUSIVE Game Directors Documentary. What we didn’t mention however, is the open invitation to our loyal God of War fans to take part in the actual filming of the documentary in front of a live studio audience.

On Wednesday, September 1st from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, we’re taking over the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, and bringing together, for the first time in history, the entire cast of God of War Game Directors for a roundtable discussion filmed in front of a live studio audience, including: David Jaffe, Cory Barlog, Stig Asmussen, Ru Weerasuiya, and Dana Jan.

As with all epic events, we’ll have gifts and prizes for all in attendance, but be sure to get there early! Seating is first come, first serve, and there’s only a total of 150 seats available.

We’ll have more information on the gifts and prizing leading up the event, but for the time being, make sure to mark your calendars (and our Facebook Fanpage) as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in this Olympic-size event with all five God of War Game Directors.

Alright, now to the important details:

Date: September 1st, 2010
Time: 4-7pm
Location: El Portal Theater (5269 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91601)

You must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by a parent – ID will be checked!

RSVP to the event invite on our Facebook Fanpage.

MotorStorm Apocalypse Video Interview

Walking around shows like gamescom, talking to journalists and developers, you pick up on certain ‘buzz phrases’ each time, and this year, one of those was “MotorStorm Apocalypse in 3D”.

Those that had played it were encouraging others to do so with anecdotes of physically ducking out of the way as a racing truck tumbles towards them. The other big news for the boys from Evolution Studios last week was that they were showing the first new track since the game’s announcement.

I managed to prise Game Director Matt Southern from his dark room for some well earned Vitamin D; check out the interview below.

gamescom 2010 Live Blog

I’m not in Cologne, Germany, for gamescom. You’re not either. But that’s OK; James Gallagher from PlayStation Blog Europe is – and he’s liveblogging today’s PlayStation press conference for all of us.

The event gets underway at 9am Pacific/noon Eastern/6pm CET.

Once the press conference is over, the fun begins – make sure to refresh the Blog at approximately 11:30am Pacific to see some of the trailers James was just describing to you.
