God of War: Ghost of Sparta Comic-Con Panel, New “Midas” Video

This past week was Comic-Con in San Diego – a gathering of all things relating to pop culture, from gaming to movies to television, and everything in between. The Ghost of Sparta development team headlined a Comic-Con panel called “The World that is God of War” in which they discussed details about the new game. Watch the video below to catch the panel.

Dana Jan (game director), Derek Mulder (lead gameplay programmer), Nathan Phail-Liff (art director), and Adam Byrne (lead animator) from Ready At Dawn Studios performed a live demo, along with a brief Q&A session for more than 250 fans and media in attendance.

Also, we were thrilled to include God of War: Ghost of Sparta in the Comic-Con festivities beginning with an unveil of new gameplay footage on SPIKE’s Friday night GameTrailers TV episode. Watch it for yourself below.

We’re calling this footage the “Midas Moment” since it depicts Kratos’s battle against King Midas. The terrain in the environment is volcanic with lava all around, providing a great glimpse into another part of the world Kratos will explore in Ghost of Sparta and another example of the breathtaking aesthetics found in the game. This scene also shows off a more immersive “in your face” battle with up-close and personal brutality. It cinematically presents the brutal, bulldozing force that Kratos exerts to obliterate each and every obstacle in his path (a la the Poseidon kill in God of War III). And with the inclusion of King Midas, it seamlessly integrates another popular character from Greek mythology into the God of War universe.

inFAMOUS 2 at Comic-Con

I’m the Senior Artist on inFAMOUS 2, responsible for doing storyboards and rendering all the line work for the 2D cut scenes, plus anything else I can help the art teams with. We are all busy working on InFAMOUS 2 but wanted let anyone who is going to SD Comic-Con know that we’ll be doing a special panel discussion this week!

It’s called “From Origin to Evolution: The Making of a Modern Day Superhero for the Videogame World,” and we’ll be discussing topics like how we made inFAMOUS, our comic inspirations, and of course some insights into what we hope to accomplish for inFAMOUS 2.  We’ll be showing some cool artwork, plus one of the first 2D cutscenes from the new game. Greg Miller from IGN fame will be moderating the discussion and you’ll be able to ask us any burning questions you might have. Here’s the summary:

inFAMOUS 2 Panel & Q&A
When: Thursday, July 22nd, 6:30pm – 7:30pm
Where: Room 7AB

On top of all that, all panel attendees will score a sweet InFAMOUS 2 shirt!

For those who can’t make it to Comic-Con this year, have no fear, check out our first behind the scenes video leading up to our panel discussion to see how much comics have been a factor in the creation of Cole and the InFAMOUS universe.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World New Comic-Con Trailer

I really enjoyed Scott Pilgrim vs The World when I played it at E3, despite having zero knowledge of the source material. Now that I’ve read the first 5 Scott Pilgrim books in record time (and will be picking up the 6th and final one today), I’m in full on “DO WANT” mode. So too, apparently, are the folks over at IGN.

Fortunately, we’ll be featuring the latest build of the game at our Comic-Con event on Thursday (invites just went out for that, btw – check your email). And Scott Pilgrim vs The World’s (PSN-exclusive) debut isn’t that far off, either – August 10th.

In the meantime, and just in time for Comic-Con, take a look at the latest trailer.

We’ll have more on Scott Pilgrim vs The World shortly after Comic-Con.

The PlayStation Fans’ Guide to San Diego Comic-Con

“So, where exactly are the comics at Comic-Con?” That’s what I wondered when I attended my first San Diego Comic-Con a few years back. Comic-Con may have been all about pulp and capes once upon a time, but these days it’s more of a celebration of geek/pop culture: sci-fi TV shows, action movies, and, of course, video games.

So for those of you attending this mega conference (about 125,000 last year), I’ve put together a primer of the PlayStation presence at the San Diego Convention Center (and beyond).

San Diego Comic-Con

The PlayStation Booth

We’re booth #4237, right next to our friends at SOE, and a stone’s throw from Capcom and WB. Play E3 favorites like LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5 (in glorious 3D), The Sly Collection, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, a host of PlayStation Move titles, and more. Plus, we’ve always got cool giveaways and schwag!

PlayStation Gaming Cocktail (Thursday night)

This event is invite only – but we’re inviting (40 of) you! Join the PlayStation team to go hands-on with our latest first-party PS3, PSP and PSN titles, including MotorStorm Apocalypse, Dead Nation, Pixeljunk Shooter 2, echochrome ii, and more (in addition to everything we’re also showing at the booth). Grab a cocktail, chat with developers and go hands-on with content from the show floor and additional software titles.

Due to space restrictions, we can only get 40 of you into this exclusive event. If you’re going to be in San Diego on Thursday night, and are 21 or older (no exceptions), drop us a line at playstationcomiccon10@gmail.com (one entry per email) before midnight tonight PT (Monday, July 19th). Please include your first and last name, and if you’d like to bring one friend. We’ll notify you if you’re selected by end of day tomorrow, July 20th. Invitees will be selected randomly.

PlayStation Panels

Comic-Con is known for its panels, where you can get face time with your favorite creators. Make sure to line up early!

Origins and Evolutions of a Video Game Superhero – inFAMOUS 2 Panel & Q&A
Time: Thursday, July 22: 6:30PM –7:30PM • Room: 7AB
Sucker Punch Productions, the developer behind the critically acclaimed PS3 summer blockbuster inFAMOUS and the upcoming inFAMOUS 2, takes you behind the scenes in the making and evolution of superhero Cole MacGrath.

Twisted Metal Returns!
Time: Friday, July 23: 1PM – 2PM • Room: 8
Come meet game directors David Jaffe (God of War) and Scott Campbell (Downhill Domination) as they introduce the demented characters of the new game, share some early looks at the game’s twisted end stories, and show concept art of the PS3 Twisted Metal that never was!

The World That is God of War
Time: Saturday, July 24: 1PM – 2PM • Room: 7AB
Ru Weerasuriya and Dana Jan have helped to expand the God of War universe with their smash hit on PlayStation Portable, God of War: Chains of Olympus. Now they’re back, along with their talented team at Ready At Dawn Studios to expand upon this blockbuster mythological world with God of War: Ghost of Sparta. Join Ru, Dana, and team for this one-on-one interview and Q&A session.

Finally, here are a few of my (non-PlayStation-specific) picks for Comic-Con. These are the ones I’m going to try to make it to when I’m not covering the events above.

Richard George from IGN explores this phenomenon, along with representatives from Dark Horse, EA, IDW, and WildStorm. Capcom

G4

Can’t make the trip? Capcom and G4 have teamed up this year to bring the action into your home. G4TV.com will be streaming 45 hours of matches over three days, including the Super Street Fighter IV Grand Finals on Sunday night with special commentators Adam Sessler (G4’s X-Play) and Capcom’s fighting guru Seth Killian. (Big ups to the crew at Level Up for producing the stream.)

Also, during the live stream one lucky viewer will have the chance to win a limited-edition gold EVO fight stick furnished by the fine folks at Mad Catz.

Gold EVO Stick

It all culminates with a special episode of X-Play on Tuesday, July 20 at 6 p.m. PST entitled X-Play vs. Capcom: EVO 2010 World Fighting Finals. (Check your local listings.)

So much awesome to fit into one weekend, but I think you can handle it.

See yourself at our E3 Hot Shots Tennis meet-up

I’m biased, but I think last month’s E3 Blog meet-up went pretty awesomely. You may have seen the amateur video of the event (and Kojima’s suprise visit), but the Hot Shots Tennis team went a step further, producing a really cool video featuring the attendees of our meetup.

Things to look out for: Frawlz and Dave from Sarcastic Gamer, Mr. Destructoid, Hiphopgamer, longtime PS Blog commenter Delriach, Hot Shots US Producer Chris Hinojosa-Miranda, Hiphopgamer’s championship belt, Rey Gutierrez’ awesome PlayStation tat, and yours truly, tired, sweaty, and hopped up on a cocktail of caffeine and adrenaline.

Were you there? Did you see yourself?

Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip is now available on UMD and PlayStation Store download for $19.99. In true Hot Shots form, it’s also really addictive.

Warhawk Tournament July 4th weekend, 75% off “Fallen Star” DLC

Calling all Warheads! Get ready for another head-to-head tournament this July 4th weekend. This time around try your skillz on the expansion pack map “Fallen Star” and in the free update mode “Collection”! (see rules below). Ten Grand Prizes will be chosen between SCEE and SCEA. These top Warheads will receive a three month subscription voucher to the new PlayStation Plus* and a Warhawk Champion’s Blade!

*Voucher can be used to extend your current service or to create a new one.

This tournament is short, so be ready to go!

Warhawk PS3 tournament July 4th weekend, 2010

And for those of you that don’t already have Fallen Star, we’ve dropped the price 75%! From June 22nd to July 6th you can pick up this explosive expansion pack for $1.99.

*You must have the full game Warhawk to play Fallen Star.

When: 5:00am Pacific, July 1 to 5:00am Pacific, July 5
Where: Warhawk Fallen Star: Collection Tourny servers (look for the blue Tourny-FallenStar # servers)
Modes: 32-player Fallen Star, Collection Mode, Team Game only
What You Need To Win: Be a part of your match’s “Winning Team” and you will get one point. You get 0 points for losses and ties.
Where To Find Your Rank: Just like last time, your stats will be posted on www.warhawk.com in the Leaderboard area. Look for the “Tourny” tab.
What You’ll Win: The top 10 players from North America and Europe will all win the fabled “Champion’s Blade.” Also, they’ll win a three-month subscription to the new PlayStation Plus subscription service.

“Collection” Rules
This gameplay mode is like multi-flag CTF. There are four energy cores scattered around the map, generally positioned in the center or between the two teams’ main bases. Each team has a Reactor where Energy Cores are taken to score points.

Warhawk PS3 tournament July 4th weekend, 2010

In the screen shot above you can see two Energy Cores positioned on a Eucadian bridge. Bringing these Cores back to your team’s reactor will score points for your team…and you can carry more than one Core at a time.

The scoring system is progressive, so if you score just one Core, your team gets just one point. Two Cores will score three points. Three Cores are good for six points…and if you manage to work as a team and bring all four Cores back to the Reactor at once, then your team scores a whopping 10 points!

Warhawk PS3 tournament July 4th weekend, 2010

As you can see in the screenshot below, the Cores are displayed on your character and the more you are carrying, the more you see whirling and orbiting around you. You’ll also see them on the mini-map as pulsing energy symbols. The score is displayed in the upper right corner as usual, but there is a new display there for Collection mode. It’s the little yellow number that shows you how many Cores your team currently is currently carrying. This ends up being critical for knowing where your focus should be — offense or defense.

Warhawk PS3 tournament July 4th weekend, 2010

…and you can press the Triangle button to throw the Cores you are carrying! Passing Cores among your team is “super-effective.”
