MAG CES Event and New Tournament Details

Not all the talk at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show was about 3D. Last Thursday, Zipper Interactive and SCEA hosted a CES MAG event at the Aria Las Vegas. One hundred community members (some from as far away as New York!) and a host of gaming and consumer electronics media joined us to celebrate MAG going gold, but the hospitality didn’t end at the hors d’oeuvres line; the first attendees through the door will receive a free retail copy of MAG later this month.

If you weren’t one of the lucky attendees but would still like to see some of the action from last week’s event, head on over to our Flickr page where you can see the highlights.

Right after we announced the gift, MAG Designer Ben Jones talked with me about what Zipper learned in the beta process to make the final launch super smooth on January 26th.

Our CES Community event wasn’t the only big news for Zipper last week. Our MAG open beta was an enormous success too, with players from all over the world helping us put the finishing touches on our game. In fact, more than a million players worldwide (860,000 in North America alone) downloaded the MAG beta between January 4 and 10 to get their Sabotage and Domination on.

But there’s more! U.S. players who still want their fill of MAG goodness before it officially comes out on January 26 can still battle it out with the PMC of their choice by heading on over to IGN.com and signing up for its MAG Tournament. Not only can you continue to shoot S.V.E.R., Raven and Valor opponents as much as you want between January 14 and 22, but you can win prizes too! So make sure you sign up before the deadline, which is tonight at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

CES 2010: 3D Q&A

3D is undoubtedly the biggest buzzword at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. We know it’s coming to the PS3, but how exactly is that going to work for current PS3 owners? I asked that question of SCEA Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller, and the answers are in the video below.

We’ll have more from CES here on Monday. In the meantime, you can find more Sony CES news here.

make.believe: Gran Turismo Made Him a Pro

If you followed along with today’s Sony CES press conference, you got a taste of Sony’s unified, global “make.believe” message. The philosophy behind make.believe is simple: Believe that anything you can imagine, you can make real. So what does that mean, exactly? A couple of examples were shown off during the press conference, but here’s an example that is a little more on track for us gamers: the story of how Lucas Ordonez went from Gran Turismo player to real-life racer:

Of course, we’ll be providing gaming highlights right here on the PlayStation.Blog. And for those joining us tomorrow afternoon – see you there!

Live from the Sony Electronics CES Press Conference

There’s a reason I take it easy on New Year’s Eve – a couple of days later, many of us in the tech industry make the annual pilgrimage to Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show.

As many of you know, CES isn’t typically a game-heavy exhibition (though PlayStation *will* have a presence). But since things like HD displays and stereo sound are so integral to the console gaming experience, we know that you’re interested in what goes down at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Today, at 4:15pm Pacific, Sony Electronics will kick off the show with a press conference, which will showcase the wide range of entertainment that Sony brings into the home (and which we’re a proud part of). We thought you might be interested in watching, and fortunately, you can see it live on Sony’s Ustream page, our Facebook page, or embedded directly below.

For more on CES throughout the show, head over to Sony USA’s CES website, and keep an eye on the Sony Electronics YouTube portal for videos on 2010’s coolest gadgets and drool-worthy home entertainment components.

Celebrate MAG Going Gold in Vegas – CES Meetup details

Do you like first-person shooters? Do you enjoy hanging out with guys who make video games? Do you consider professionally-catered appetizers “food of the gods?” If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then you don’t want to miss our MAG Community Event in Las Vegas!

CES MAG Meetup

All you have to do, besides be 18 years of age or older, is show up at the brand new Aria Hotel at CityCenter on Thursday, January 7 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Once you’re there, you can sit back and mingle with the developers of MAG, and be among the first groups of people to try out the final PSN beta for MAG – one of the most extensive and ambitious beta programs in PlayStation history.

Keep in mind, we’re limiting entry to the event to only the first 100 people, so don’t think you can just waltz right in and take all of our hors d’oeuvres buddy! If you want to go, be sure to visit this link on the PlayStation Facebook Fan Page and RSVP. If you don’t let us know you’re coming via Facebook, then we won’t let you in at the event – so don’t forget this important step. Here are the details you need:

Who: You and 99 other diehard MAG fans
When: Thursday, January 7 from 4:00 to 7:00pm
Where: The Aria Hotel at CityCenter in Las Vegas, Nevada

Requirements:
· You must be 18 years-old or older – ID *will* be checked by burly men!
· You must RSVP via the Facebook event page.
· Don’t hang out in the main lobby! Line up outside Juniper rooms 2 & 3.

And there you have it. We look forward to seeing you all there!
