Watch Fighting Game Masters at EVO, Play Marvel vs. Capcom 3 on PS3
Posted by Wes Phillips in Events, PS3, PlayStation Games, capcom, evo, marvel vs. capcom 3 on July 8th, 2010
Wes Phillips and Sid Shuman discuss Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s new characters and gameplay tweaks at E3 2010.
Hello PlayStation Nation! This is a big weekend for fighting game fans, as the world’s best descend upon Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for the EVO 2010 World Fighting Finals this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Thousands of contestants from over 30 countries will battle it out for fame, glory and cash in Super Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and a couple non-Capcom games… Tekken 6 and Melty Blood: Actress Again.
Registration for the event is officially closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a piece of the action. If you can make the trip to Las Vegas, admission to watch the event is free.
We’ll also have the E3 build of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 available to play on PlayStation 3 for anyone who shows up! This will be the first time the game is playable for the general public.
Did I mention that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 just won Best Fighting Game at E3?
If that wasn’t enough, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 producer Ryota Niitsuma and Super Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono will both be on hand to greet the fans.
Can’t make the trip? Capcom and G4 have teamed up this year to bring the action into your home. G4TV.com will be streaming 45 hours of matches over three days, including the Super Street Fighter IV Grand Finals on Sunday night with special commentators Adam Sessler (G4’s X-Play) and Capcom’s fighting guru Seth Killian. (Big ups to the crew at Level Up for producing the stream.)
Also, during the live stream one lucky viewer will have the chance to win a limited-edition gold EVO fight stick furnished by the fine folks at Mad Catz.
It all culminates with a special episode of X-Play on Tuesday, July 20 at 6 p.m. PST entitled X-Play vs. Capcom: EVO 2010 World Fighting Finals. (Check your local listings.)
So much awesome to fit into one weekend, but I think you can handle it.
Dead Rising 2 E3 Interview
Posted by Jeff Rubenstein in E310, Events, PS3, PlayStation Games, capcom, dead rising 2 on June 24th, 2010
While Sid and I conducted a video interview on Marvel vs Capcom 3 (post coming soon!), SCEE’s James Gallagher traveled across the cavernous Capcom booth to the Dead Rising 2 area. The game has progressed significantly on PS3 since we saw it a couple months back, so he held a chat with Producer Mike Schmitt. And because James is English, he didn’t even realize that the man hit over 500 home runs! Facepalm!
Fortunately, the fact that he wasn’t starstruck allowed him to focus on the game itself. Have at it, James:
Dead Rising 2 is a zombie game with its tongue hanging out of its cheek. You control Chuck Greene, a motorcross champion trapped in a zombie apocalypse in the fictional Fortune City, which is loosely based on Las Vegas. After tearing through a few hundred zombies with a pair of chainsaws attached to a canoe paddle, I lurched over to Capcom’s Mike Schmitt and asked a few questions.
What kind of story is there in Dead Rising 2?
“Chuck is competing in a gameshow called Terror is Reality in order to earn some money and cure his daughter, who has been bitten by a zombie. That’s his main motivation but there’s also a conspiracy against him, with people blaming him for the zombie outbreak at the beginning of the game.”
Given that the story allows for multiple paths and endings, how many unique playthroughs are possible?
“I don’t know the final count but there are multiple endings and we definitely want people to go back and keep playing, because levelling Chuck up opens up new areas and things to do.”
I’ve had some fun here combining weapons; how many combinations are there?
“Again, we haven’t given out an exact number but it’s a lot – dozens and dozens. We want people to search for combo cards and just try putting stuff together at random. Combining weapons is some of the most fun that can be had in the game, as far as we’re concerned, and combination weapons give you double PP, allowing you to level up much quicker.”
What’s your favourite combination?
“My favourite is the Freedom Bear. If you take a jumbo teddy bear and combine it with a machine gun, it turns into a sentry with a Rambo headband that you can place in congested areas, and it will mow down zombies with machine gun fire for what seems like hours.”
Is the co-operative gameplay integrated into the story?
“Your friends can jump into your game at any point and if you want to play co-operatively from start to finish, then you can do that. The host player controls things like saving but whoever jumps in can carry PP and Combo Cards over to their own game. Playing with friends is particularly useful for things like boss fights and it is fun to just mess around.”
Do you also have competitive multiplayer?
“Yes, we have a four player versus mode which plays off the Terror is Reality theme. There are ten different events to play, including one where you’re all riding motorcycles with chainsaws attached to the handlebars and it’s a race to see who can kill the most zombies before the time runs out.”
Finally, what do you want people to feel when they play Dead Rising 2?
“Excitement… the feeling that you want to keep playing because you don’t know what to expect. I really want people to pick up on the humour. A lot of zombie games are so serious but Dead Rising 2 is about the ridiculous predicament Chuck finds himself in and the way that you’re able to humiliate zombies and use anything as a weapon makes it comical.”
Also, James, Group C champions! USA! USA!

What a week! With eight years of the E3 Expo under my belt, this was perhaps the most exciting, inspiring show I’ve attended. For me, the highlights included experiencing stereoscopic 3D in games like Killzone 3 and MotorStorm Apocalypse (seeing is believing), sampling the many PlayStation Move games (the precision and gameplay versatility were on full display), and the much-anticipated return of Twisted Metal from Eat Sleep Play. Oh, and Kevin Butler.
And of course, games, games, games: From heavyweights like MotorStorm Apocalypse, LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5, SOCOM 4, inFAMOUS 2, and God of War: Ghost of Sparta to head-turning PSN titles like Dead Nation, Journey, and PixelJunk Shooter 2 — this year, the games did all the talking. And don’t get me started on the third-party lineup, with Dead Space 2, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Medal of Honor, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Crysis 2, Mafia II, Portal 2, Mortal Kombat, Scott Pilgrim…I could go on all day and I’d run out of breath before I named them all.
This is an excellent time to be a gamer. It’s also an excellent time to have access to a camera, as this year’s E3 booths were bigger and bolder than I’ve seen in years. I wanted to give PlayStation.Blog readers an inside look at some of the most inspired booth layouts we spotted on the show floor. It’s by no means a complete look, but I hope you enjoy the eye candy.

Lost Planet 2 Has Something Special For PS3 Fans
Posted by Brian Keltner in PS3, PlayStation Games, capcom, lost planet 2 on May 14th, 2010
That’s right, coming in June, PS3 owners will be able to download two skins of the Helghast characters from Killzone at no charge! These skins, in addition to the previously announced Monster Hunter skin which will be available later this month, are exclusive to PlayStation fans across the globe. From the “My Page” menu in Lost Planet 2, players can build and customize their own unique character for use in the online versus mode. Once a player completes the campaign mode, they can port their multiplayer characters to the co-op story action, including the in-game cut scenes. While there are numerous options for unlocking head, torso, arm, leg, and backpack pieces for your character, the character skins for Helghast, Monster Hunter, Dead Rising’s Frank West, and Resident Evil’s Albert Wesker must all be used as a single piece.
Lost Planet 2 launched on Tuesday, but the two Killzone Helghast scout skins will be available at the end of June and will be free of charge. Keep an eye out on the PlayStation.Blog and Capcom’s Unity blog for more specifics on timing and availability!
First Look: Dead Rising 2 on PS3
Posted by Jeff Rubenstein in PS3, PlayStation Games, capcom, dead rising 2 on May 12th, 2010
When zombies first descended on the shoppers of fictional Willamette, Colorado in Dead Rising, the PlayStation 3… didn’t exist. Four years later, the zombies are ready to shamble, moan, and hunger for brains again in Dead Rising 2 – coming to PS3 this August.
Didn’t play the first game? We’ve got you covered. Capcom’s Mike Schmitt and Wes Phillips walk us through the sequel’s new multiplayer modes, and give newcomers a look at the delicious combination of goofiness and gore that summarize the Dead Rising universe.
We’ll have more Dead Rising 2 throughout the Summer. If you’ve got any questions, throw ‘em in the comments – we’ll remember them for next time.
New Release: Super Street Fighter IV for PS3
Posted by Yoshinori Ono in PS3, PlayStation Games, capcom, street fighter on April 27th, 2010
Hi PlayStation fans!
I’ve listened to PlayStation users voice their opinions for the past 10 years. They’ve said, “We’re waiting for the next numbered sequel to Street Fighter!”
I have to apologize that it took Capcom almost a decade to make the decision… but, I really appreciate your continuous support, and I’m now armed with weapons and armor to fight as Capcom’s voice in this tough global market. It is as if I’m fighting as King Arthur from Ghosts ‘n Goblins!
The original Street Fighter IV was released in February 2009. Before that, it has been about 15 years since the SFII series, and 10 years since the SFIII series. I strongly feel that SFIV wouldn’t have happened without your support. I’m glad that Street Fighter is now back, and I’d like to say “thank you” to all of you.
And now SFIV is fully renewed and, to reinforce the upgrades, we’ve added the pre-fix “Super.” All of the additions are a reflection of what you, the fans, have voiced, so I hope you will continue to play it as long as possible. Also, please be sure that I truly did try to listen to your requests as much as possible in deciding the new characters.
There are also fans demanding functionality related to PlayStation Network, so we’ve implemented the “Endless Battle” and “Team Battle” modes. “Team Battle” allows users to play as a team, and provides you with a platform for researching which are the best teams. Also, all of the modes have the “battle observation” mode, which allows you to watch the matches as they are played by your friends. All battles can be saved with the replay save request if you want. These features were created to build a stronger community within PSN.
Also, all SSFIV replay data which is saved on your PS3 can be shared with other online-connected PS3’s worldwide. This “Replay Channel Mode” allows you to watch any replays and is available 24/7 on the PS3 through PSN. Now you can’t hide from Street Fighter anymore!
As many of you know, we had a PlayStation-supported SSFIV Fight Club event with the fans in a Los Angeles suburb on Friday, April 23rd. It was a big success, and I was pleasantly surprised that about 1,000 fans attended! It is this amazing support that is exceptionally important, and provides the motivation for us to develop new projects in the future. To be completely honest, I’m absolutely exhausted now since I’ve been running non-stop for several years, so please let me take a break for a little bit. J I’m sure that the break won’t last that long…
I’ll be back in the near future with a great idea for a new project which will hopefully get you excited!
Well, the last topic on this blog is about the Super Tournament Mode that will be available as a free download for SSFIV this June. To showcase how great this new mode is, we’re planning to organize an online tournament in cooperation with SCEA. Tournament Mode allows us to create exclusive “titles” (like a champion belt) that will be awarded to the winner of the tournament. Please look forward to it, and stay tuned!
With the big support from all the PlayStation users, Super Street Fighter IV has been excitingly launched! I consider a fighting game to be a virtual “tool” of real fighting. And, as in real-life fighting, perfection is what we are striving for. So if any unexpected bugs happen, please let us know and we’ll do our best to fix them.
It would be highly appreciated if you keep conveying your requests and voicing your opinions to us moving forward. We will try our best to implement your requests in the future.
Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing all of you somewhere in the future. And, I expect you to “Smile” with “Surprise” then.
Everyone, again, thank you very much!
Lost Planet 2 Multiplayer Demo Is Here!
Posted by Brian Keltner in Demos, PS3, PlayStation Games, capcom, lost planet 2 on April 22nd, 2010
Hello PlayStation Blog! Beginning with today’s PlayStation Store Update, the Lost Planet 2 Multiplayer Demo will be available on PSN. Get together with up to 16 players, grab some weapons, jump in a vital suit and compete in Elimination, Team Elimination, or Data post Grab modes. This is just a sample of the various modes and ten maps you’ll be able to play when the full game ships on May 11.
But wait, there is more! Downloading the demo does more than just let you get a first taste at Lost Planet 2. Capcom has started an exciting charity campaign called, “Kill Big for Charity”. We are partnering with Music for Relief, a non-profit organization dedicated to disaster relief and disaster risk mitigation, to contribute $20,000 to charity if one million demos are downloaded across both PSN and XBL before May 5, 2010. An additional $5,000 will be added to the pot if an extra 500,000 demo downloads can be achieved.
To celebrate the launch of Lost Planet 2, we will be throwing a tournament on May 6 in Los Angeles. Select members of our community, Capcom Unity, will compete in the tournament with celebrities and press members. For information and how to enter, visit the details page on Capcom Unity.
The winning team in the tournament will choose which Music for Relief program will receive the donation. Help us achieve our goal by downloading the demo and spreading the word to your friends today!

LA, you’re invited! Super Street Fighter IV Event this Friday
Posted by Seth Killian in Events, PS3, capcom, meetup, street fighter on April 19th, 2010
Hi guys, I’m Seth Killian, O.G. Street Fighter, Capcom community guy, and the shadowy “special advisor” to Super Street Fighter IV. I wanted to give the PlayStation.Blog a heads-up on a little party we’re teaming up with Sony to throw in honor of the arrival of our new game.
For those who don’t know, we call these things “Fight Clubs” and the concept is pretty simple. We find an underground location (sometimes literally underground, sometimes just an abandoned warehouse, sometimes a sneaker shop, but you get the idea), and drop a bunch of Street Fighter games in there, then let people throw down in arcade-style, face-to-face combat. We spice it up with some totally exclusive shirt giveaways, exclusive artwork and giftbags, and maybe… just maybe, some extra epic events.
The party is going down this Friday, April 23rd, from 8pm to midnight, in Los Angeles, CA (in the Silver Lake neighborhood). We’ll post the exact address on Thursday, so stay tuned, but here’s a little taste of what’s in store, and why people are already making plans to fly into town just for this party:
- Hands on with Super Street Fighter IV, including chances to win an early copy of the final game on PlayStation 3.
- Great Street Fighter art on the exclusive shirts + posters, live art on the walls, and even… on you?
- Gift bags for the first few hundred fans through the door
- Live DJ, light food and drinks
- Big-screen game exhibitions, plus appearances from some very special guests all the way from Japan
- One final note—we have an, um… special opportunity for some brave fans to win some great prizes, but to participate, you’ll want to bring a change of clothes—clothes you don’t mind having potentially destroyed :-)
This event is open to the public, and based on some of our past parties, there’s a very good chance this is going to be totally nuts. Translation: if you want to go, try and arrive early! We’ll be posting the exact address and one more surprise on Wednesday, so stay tuned. But make your plans now, and set expectations to “awesome.”
For anyone that isn’t in LA, or just can’t make it, you can watch the action on the Capcom ustream page. Event starts at 8, but we may begin streaming anytime that day!
Super Street Fighter IV arrives on April 27th, and it’s only $39.99. For fighting fans, this is a no-brainer, but for anybody that missed out on the original Street Fighter IV, or just wants to see what it is about these games that drives their fans so crazy, do yourself a favor pick this up (and come down to the party!)
Coming to PSN this Week: Final Fight: Double Impact
Posted by Jason Allen in PS3, PSN, PlayStation Games, capcom, final fight, magic sword on April 14th, 2010
Capcom’s ready to unleash the next masterpiece in its retro digital dynasty. Starting tomorrow, April 15th, fans can own two incredible Capcom classic releases — Final Fight and Magic Sword — all for the price of one ($9.99). Make way for Final Fight: Double Impact, hitting PlayStation Network with a vintage vengeance!
In Final Fight, players follow the heart-pounding adventures of Cody, Guy, and Haggar — three heroes fighting their way across crime-ridden Metro City in hopes of saving Haggar’s daughter from the evil clutches of Mad Gear. In Magic Sword, users will take on the role of a brave warrior and his eight allies, all bearing the daunting responsibility of cleansing evil forces from an ancient tower.
These two games take us back to a time when arcades were sanctuaries of youthful bliss. They are un-self-conscious treasures, clear in their pursuit to inflame the imagination and turn players into brawling action heroes. At Capcom, we’ve sought to reacquaint our fans with this experience and refine it in the process.
Both Final Fight and Magic Sword are playable in HD, leveraging modern technology to elevate the visuals to the eye-popping standards of today. But we realize that some fans are purist about there retro experience and for them we’ve provided mode options that allow them to toggle back to a classic mode that renders the game in its original format.
Outside of mailing a real live arcade cabinet to your house, Capcom has gone the extra mile in delivering the best retro experience possible. Play settings offer a classic arcade bezel to play with that looks so real, you’ll be looking for a slot on your console to drop a token in (we promise, it’s not there). The “GGPO” network technology creates a frame-accurate arcade experience across the internet with online voice chat and the ability to join games in progress. Thanks to the innovative open invite system, other fighters can jump into a game seamlessly just like the kids did in the pizza parlors and 7-Elevens of yore. And of course we’ve got essentials like the leaderboards for both games that track scores and instigate the inevitable smack-talk buffoonery we all love.
Final Fight: Double Impact has trophies and a ton of rewards. Cool nuggets like the collectable art pieces will make multiple playthroughs all the more satisfying. Vault mode houses the gallery of curated pieces which are fun to look at in between the head-bashing. Other extras include original game art, full motion video (including a long-forgotten epic Final Fight cartoon), manga chapters from Udon, and fan art for completing in-game challenges. There’s also an awesome soundtrack composed by the talented team behind the score for Bionic Commando Rearmed. Original music will be available as well.
We are incredibly excited to finally bring these games to the PlayStation 3 audience. Make sure to hit the PlayStation Store tomorrow and download this historic release!
