- Be(come) a Plus subscriber

What We’re Playing: Medal of Honor for PS3 – Win a Beta Code!
Posted by Sid Shuman in beta, DICE, E310, EA, medal of honor, PlayStation Games, PS3 on June 24th, 2010
Wait, why are you reading this? You know that the Medal of Honor multiplayer beta is live for the PS3 right now – don’t you?
Beta access is reserved for those who pre-order the full version of Medal of Honor, EA and DICE’s modern-day war shooter that hits the PS3 this October. Luckily, we’ve got 18 beta code vouchers* to hand out to loyal PlayStation.Blog readers – keep an eye on the official PlayStation Twitter feed to find out how to win later today. To get a head start on the giveaway, watch the following video (very) carefully.
**Note: If you do win a beta voucher, you must redeem it on the official Medal of Honor site and specify PS3 to get a code you can redeem on the PSN Store.
At the 2010 E3 Expo last week, Medal of Honor executive producer Greg Goodrich and creative director Richard Farrelly gave us a primer on what’s new (modern-day Afghanistan with modern-day weapons), what’s unlockable (Tier 1 Operator status and…beards?!), and what’s planned for the final release of Medal of Honor this fall. Our E3 multiplayer session highlighted Medal of Honor’s extensive class customization. You can choose between the long-range Rifleman class, which excels at distance-based fighting; the Sniper class, which focuses on long-range marksmanship; and the Special Ops class, which packs grenades and faster-firing weapons for close-range domination.
The weapon modification system also stands out for its modular, ultra-customizable nature. For instance, the Rail slot can be equipped with a red dot sight, iron sights, or a combat scope; the Barrel slot can take a suppressor or muzzle brake. Each mod offers its own advantages and disadvantages, and when you factor in Medal of Honor’s variable ammunition types (hollowpoint rounds, shotgun slugs, extra mags), you’re looking at a highly personalized multiplayer shooter.
Peep the interview video, follow us on Twitter, and prepare to take a shot at a slice of Honor. Salud!
ModNation Racers Beta Recap
Posted by Ramone Russell in beta, modnation racers, PlayStation Games, PS3, united front games on January 13th, 2010
Hello everyone!
Ramone Russell here, back again with a complete recap on the ModNation Racers beta. Well, the beta is over and we wanted to give everyone an update on how things went. First and foremost, we are absolutely astounded by the sheer amount and variety of user generated content that was created during the online beta. Thousands upon thousands of karts, mods, and tracks were created, remixed, shared and uploaded. On the racing side of things, there were over 95,000 total races played during the beta.
Playing, creating, and sharing (while awesome), is just one piece of the beta puzzle. We were also able to gather pages upon pages of feedback on all areas of the game. The information gathered is a vital part of the beta process as we make the final changes and tweaks to ModNation Racers before it ships later this year.
All of us at UFG and SCEA would like to thank everyone who participated in the beta for your help giving the game a thorough vetting.
If you have seen interviews or previews with William Ho, Dan Sochan, or anyone else from the UFG team, you know we are super excited about the possibilities of user-generated content for ModNation Racers. With this in mind, we wanted to show everyone a small fraction of that content created during the beta. Also keep in mind that the beta build of the game had more than 90% of the parts (shirts, pants, terrain brushes, etc.) locked out. Every one of these creations was made using a very small portion of the parts found in the final version of the game. Below are just a few images, but you can click through to our Flickr page to access the whole set.

For your viewing pleasure. I have also included two YouTube videos made by members of the beta community. The first shows the track creation tools, and the second is all about Mod creation.

MAG Beta Starts Today
Posted by Jeremy Dunham in beta, MAG, PlayStation Games, PS3, zipper on January 4th, 2010
Welcome back from the holidays, Zipper fans! As we mentioned before we went on break, today is the day that our 100% free and open MAG Beta program kicks off on the PlayStation Network!
Hopefully, you’ve taken advantage of the head start we provided a few weeks back and already downloaded all the files you need so you can just log in and start playing the game immediately. If you didn’t get a chance to grab the goods quite yet, however, or are just now learning about the program for the first time, that’s okay too – anyone can grab the MAG Beta and its files at any time between now and the end of the testing phase on January 10 at 11:59pm.
Here’s a three-step refresher course on what you’ll need to do to get the Beta:
-
1. Log on to the PlayStation Store, Select “View All By Title -> M Titles -> MAG” and download the MAG Beta file like you would any other freely-available PSN video or demo (298 MB)
2. Launch the MAG Beta program from your XMB to download a special patch that will restart MAG once the update has been received (another 37 MB)
3. After the reboot, the Beta will reconnect and download the actual game data so that you can play (1.8 GB – 2.3 GB depending on your region)
Remember, the MAG Beta is taking place worldwide – all you need to participate no matter where you live is a PlayStation 3 and an internet connection. Once you’ve logged on, get ready to enjoy two different game modes: 64-player sabotage and 256-player domination!
We hope you enjoy the Beta up until January 10, and we’ll see you again later this week in Vegas for our big MAG Goes Gold Community Event.
ModNation Racers Track Studio Walkthrough with Track Designer Mark Riddell
Posted by Mark Riddell in beta, modnation racers, PlayStation Games, PS3, united front games on December 23rd, 2009
I’m Mark Riddell, a track designer for ModNation Racers on PS3. Last week, Rob laid out even more details of the character creation features in the game, and today I’ll be talking to you about some of the features of Track Studio.
One of the design goals of Track Studio has always been to cater to both casual and advanced users. You’ve probably seen and read about people easily creating tracks in just a few minutes. But as a track designer, I’m more interested in what I can do with the tools, and how far I can push them. So today I’m going to talk about a few powerful features that we use to create cool gameplay moments on our tracks.
When you drive out your track, we’ve tuned it so that you’ll always make a track that is drive-able to ensure a good experience. But we don’t want those constraints to stop you from making something unique and wild. That’s why we’ve provided basic width, lift and bank in Quick Edit to allow further customization of the track after you’ve driven it out. They are easy to use, and will give most people what they need to customize and tune their track. As a professional track designer I require an even finer level of control – and this led to the development of the Advanced Edit tool.
With Advanced Edit, I can directly manipulate all the points that make up the path of the track, allowing for very fine control of position, elevation and slope. Even better, I can edit any of the four points across the section of track that defines the width of the road, fence and runoff on either side. While still intuitive to use, this allows me to get precise banks, fun drops and cool technical sections that you can’t get just by driving out a track. Another great trick is with one or more points selected holding the square button will smooth the selection, which has proven immensely handy!
Populating the track with props is another good example of advanced tools. While a casual user may enjoy our impressive Auto Populate feature, advanced users often have more specific ideas of where things should go. We have tools to let you place objects almost anywhere on the track or terrain. The object will automatically snap to the ground, which is a big time saver. You can choose to ‘unpin’ the props as well and just their elevation above or below the track or terrain. These tools also help you place things more easily, such as flattening the terrain under a building you’ve placed, or allowing you to “spray” down a row of fences, even over hills! The tool also allows you to lasso select a group of props and move or rotate them, even spread them out over a larger area or delete them.
Driving on terrain was something that was fun right from the start, and we knew we wanted to include it. We’ve given you Erase Surface road style – just paint it down like you would cobblestone, for instance. It smoothly transitions from the road to driving directly on the terrain, and allows you to construct the drive using terrain sculpting tools – great for rally style tracks! I’ve found the Advanced Sculpt brushes really useful for tight control while adjusting terrain for these sections. Also remember to paint the terrain using Surface and Ground Cover brushes to help define paths for the players — you don’t want people getting lost.
Breadcrumbs also are really useful here. Breadcrumbs came about as a way to make shortcuts across the terrain, while allowing for the game logic for racing, weapons and A.I. to keep working. Starting from the main road, create a trail of breadcrumbs leading off the track and then back, and now that becomes a race-able part of the circuit. It’s awesome for making shortcuts or alternate paths across terrain — just remember to get rid of the roadside fences to allow the players off and back on the main road.
There are so many more cool features to talk about in Track Studio. I look forward to seeing and racing your cool designs!
MAG is Gold, Beta for Everyone Soon
Posted by Jeremy Dunham in beta, MAG, PlayStation Games, PS3, zipper on December 21st, 2009
On behalf of everyone at Zipper Interactive, I’m proud to announce that following our successful series of beta programs this past fall, our 256-player first-person shooting spectacular, MAG, has gone gold in North America, Japan, Korea, and the rest of Asia. It is now headed off to manufacturing so that the game can make it from store shelves to PlayStation 3s all over the world. Expect MAG to drop on January 26 in North America and Asia, January 28 in Japan, and January 29 in Korea.
The European discs are finishing up final quality assurance rounds right now and we expect to see those editions go gold sometime in the next few weeks.
We realize that the wait is still more than a month away, which is why we’re also pleased to announce a cool little surprise (or should I say, a “great, big surprise?”) to tide you over. In an effort to give you a taste of what to expect with the final version of MAG, Zipper and Sony Computer Entertainment will team up on January 4 to bring you our final and 100% open PSN beta.
But what’s so great about MAG Beta 5? Well, to start, it will take place worldwide — so if you’re in a territory with a PlayStation 3 and an Internet connection, you qualify to be a part of it. What’s more is that you won’t need any special permissions or code keys to participate, you’ll just get it and go! Complete access to the game’s 64-player sabotage and 256-player Domination modes are pretty good reasons to get excited too.
Of course, the best news about MAG Beta 5 is that you’ll be able to download the client in North America starting tomorrow, December 22! Additionally, PS3 owners in Asia can start downloading the file on December 25, while the European store will make it available on January 4. Check back for details on Japanese PSN store access in the near future.
Now that you know where to get the MAG Beta, your path to playing it is a simple three-step process:
- Log on to the PlayStation Store (tomorrow) and download the MAG Beta file like you would any other freely-available PSN video or demo (298 MB)
- Launch the MAG Beta program from your XMB to download a special patch that will restart MAG once the update has been received (another 38 MB)
- After the reboot, the beta will reconnect and download the actual game data so that you can play (1.8 GB – 2.3 GB depending on your region)
Complete the steps above and you’ll be ready to rock ‘n roll — and shoot things and blow stuff up — until the beta ends on January 10 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time. Keep in mind, though, that you won’t actually be able to play the MAG beta directly until the servers go live at 5 am Pacific on January 4. But hey, look at the bright side: this is the last time you’ll ever have to download a MAG file this big (since the data will already be on the retail disc when it ships next month), and you’ll save a whole lot of extra shooting time by downloading what you need early on; thus allowing you to jump into the action immediately on the 4th.
Oh, and one last thing before I go: I know I speak for everyone here at Zipper Interactive when I say that each and every one of us wishes you and yours a happy and safe holiday season. Thank you very much for supporting our community and our game in 2009, and we look forward to giving you exactly what you’ve been waiting for in 2010!
